Choosing an Instrument for Your Child
“Choosing an Instrument for Your Child” from The Hamilton Spectator July 19, 2013:
Music is a great creative outlet for children. It can help with their confidence and introduce them to new friends. The Hamilton School of Music offers music lessons in a variety of instruments. From the rock and roll of an electric guitar to the classical elegance of the piano, there is an instrument that will pique the interest of every child.
Finding the right instrument for your child is an important consideration. You want to ensure that your child is interested in it before you make the investment into purchasing the instrument and the classes involved. The Hamilton School of Music recommends that parents take some initial steps to help their children find that perfect instrument.
Talk to your child and expose them to music.
Let your child borrow your CDs, encourage them to listen, and ask them what they think about the artist and the genre. If your child likes the classics, then a band instrument might be ideal. If they like something progressive, then a guitar or drum set might be your best bet.
Educational benefits of a musical education.
Studies have shown that children who study music tend to score better in their school studies compared to their classroom peers who do not participate in any music lessons. Music pupils have been found to score 22% better in English and 20% better in math compared to children who do not take up music.
Letting your child become exposed to instruments and music is key. For options on the right instrument for your child, please contact The Hamilton School of Music today (905) 318-6923 or email brenda@hamiltonschoolofmusic.ca
