Building confidence through music
Music is more than learning notes. It’s about confidence, creativity, connection, and discovering what you’re capable of.
Hamilton School of Music has been part of the Hamilton community since 1995, welcoming students of all ages and abilities from Hamilton, Stoney Creek, Ancaster, Dundas, Binbrook and surrounding communities.
At HSM, we believe music education should be both inspiring and meaningful. Whether a student is picking up an instrument for the very first time, preparing for an examination, joining a band, or stepping onto the stage to perform, our goal is to help every student grow as both a musician and an individual.

We want HSM to be a place where students come to learn music, but also a place where they belong, build confidence, make connections and are excited to come back each week.
Hamilton School of Music is proud to have a team of experienced and dedicated music educators who teach a wide range of instruments, styles and skill levels.
We believe that every student learns differently. Our teachers combine strong musical foundations with an engaging, individualized approach, adapting lessons to each student’s goals, interests and learning style. We strive to create a positive and encouraging environment where students feel supported, challenged and inspired to grow.
At HSM, music education extends beyond the lesson room. Students are encouraged to develop confidence through recitals, performances, examinations, ensembles and other musical opportunities throughout the year.
We believe that performing and connecting with others are important parts of a student’s musical development. Through school events and community performances, our students have opportunities to share their music, celebrate their accomplishments and experience the joy of performing for others.
Most importantly, our goal is not simply to teach students how to play an instrument. We want to help them build confidence, develop creativity, connect with others and create a lifelong relationship with music.
Under the direction of Owner and Director Zoia Kouznetsov, HSM is entering an exciting new chapter—building on more than 30 years of music education while introducing new programs, performance opportunities and experiences for our students.
The Hamilton School of Music is committed to teaching every student in a creative, yet structured, manner with a focus on their various interests and desires. Our professionally trained teachers create a supportive and encouraging environment which respects the individual differences and learning styles of each student while fostering their self-esteem and motivation to succeed.
Regular opportunities are available for our students to perform in recitals for family and friends. Our school is also committed to giving back to the community with performances at various events held in local libraries, churches and hospitals.
The History of the Hamilton School of Music
The Hamilton School of Music was founded in 1995 by the accomplished accordionist and local musician Glen Ellement who wished to provide quality music education for children and adults in the greater Hamilton area. Throughout the years Glen employed many highly qualified and professionally trained teachers in various instruments, and the school’s roster grew into the hundreds. Many students have gone on to complete post secondary musical studies and some have careers in music. One of the school’s teachers, Brenda Kushnir, who herself had renewed her musical studies as an adult, decided to embark on a new career as an entrepreneur and bought the business in 2012 upon Glen’s retirement. Brenda and her entire family have, at one point or another, taken lessons at the Hamilton School of Music since 2001.
In 2026, Brenda retired and Hamilton School of Music began its next chapter under the ownership and direction of Zoia. Like Brenda, Zoia’s connection to HSM began long before becoming its owner, with her children having been part of the school community since 2019.
Today, HSM continues to build on more than 30 years of music education in Hamilton while looking toward the future. Under Zoia’s direction, the school is expanding opportunities for students to learn, perform, collaborate and connect through music, while continuing to provide the welcoming and supportive environment that has been at the heart of HSM for decades.
